The Christmas Song

"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" is the name of a classic Christmas song, written in 1944 by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells.

The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded the song in 1946, using Cole's own arrangement; at the urging of his record label, Capitol Records, Cole re-recorded the song in 1961, using the same arrangement with a full orchestra. The 1961 recording became a major pop hit and is generally regarded as the definitive rendition.

The song has been covered by numerous artists since, including Ella Fitzgerald, Vince Guaraldi, The Carpenters, The Jackson 5, The Duprees, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Luther Vandross, Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Jessica Simpson and its co-writer, Mel Tormé.

The Christmas Song

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping at your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
Merry Christmas to you
