"Candle In The Wind 1997" or "Goodbye England's Rose" is a remake of the original 1973 "Candle In The Wind", with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin. The 1997 version of the song was released as a single version, and peaked at number one in the UK, USA, Australia and Canada.
On 31 August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash. Elton John decided he wanted to pay a tribute to the Princess and he contacted his veteran writing partner, Bernie Taupin. Due to the limited time available, they felt it was not possible to write a new song, and chose to re-write the lyrics to "Candle in the Wind", the first line was changed into "Goodbye, England's Rose". George Martin was contacted to help produce the song, and added a string quartet and woodwind to help balance the recording.
John sang "Candle In The Wind 1997" in public, for the first and only time in history, at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997. John has repeatedly turned down requests to perform the song live and only plays the 1973 version at concerts. The song has also never been released on any of his albums. He has stated that he will play the song again only if requested by Diana's sons William and Harry. It has been reported that John will play the 1997 version at the Concert For Diana, due to be held at Wembley Stadium in 2007.
From a worldwide perspective, over 33 million copies were sold around the globe. It is estimated that at the peak of sales, almost six copies of the single were sold across the world per
second. All artist and composer royalties and record company profits were donated to the
Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will
Loveliness we've lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we'll always carry
For our nation's golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned our long before
Your legend ever will
Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
Goodbye England's rose
From a country lost without your soul
Who'll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you'll ever know
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And you footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will
